In 2016, my dad had asked me if I wanted to hike the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) with him. This trail runs from the Mexican border to Canada, is 4265km (2650 ml) long and takes about six months to hike. We decided to conquer a section of it and planned on hiking through the wilderness of California for two months towards Mexico. Hiking this trail means planning your food supply in advance since you spend most of your days in the mountains, in the wilderness. You get to a town or some civilization probably around every 7-14 days. This means you will carry everything you need in your backpack. You will learn not to need anything! One shirt, one pair of socks and one pair of boxers! At first, I loved the idea of hiking the PCT, as soon as we hit the trail I was annoyed and really didn’t want to be there. It was incredibly hard and tiering. We hiked from in the morning at six am to the evening at around eight pm carrying a 30kg backpack. At some point I fell asleep while walking. After around three weeks everything changed. I woke up and loved every step. I had finally learned to enjoy this adventure and all the sudden everything, every accent and every pass felt easy. It was amazing! My dad and I hiked every day. There were days when we almost didn’t talk at all, but also days when we wouldn’t shut up. Together we dreamed about new projects we would take on. He told me, that he would have loved to be an artist in NY and I talked about my music. We talked about life, love, and laughter! It was amazing! Even though it was the hardest thing I had ever done, we enjoyed every second of it. We felt absolute free! It was amazing! After 43 days on the trial, we arrived at the most beautiful place in the world. It’s called Mary Lake. It looks like it’s from another planet. There, we took a short break before we made our way up to Silver Pass. It was that night when after we set up camp and went to sleep, my dad decided to stay in these mountains forever. He died on August 1, 2016, under the stars of California. I thought hiking this trail was the hardest thing I would ever do. Wrong! Everything from that point on topped everything. We were in the mounts, no cell phone reception, no one around and now I was all by myself! What do you do? I don’t believe in God but thank God there are trail angels who helped me on the adventure of my lifetime!
